Our Nottinghamshire Heritage
The idea of honouring our Nottinghamshire Victoria Cross holders who had no Memorial Headstones, Began back in January 2005, when Tony Higton visited the Victoria Cross holders that are laid to rest in Nottinghamshire, when it was discovered initially that two had no known Memorials. Then early May 2005 he began his attempts to obtain a memorial for Robert Humpston VC, and after 2 1/2 years of research a headstone was unveiled to Robert Humpston VC, and in the mean time 'Ron Booth's, John Joseph Caffrey VC project' was completed. and this was then followed again by Tony Higtons 'Charles Ernest Garforth VC project, and from these events by the idea to honour all of the 20 Victoria Cross holders in Nottinghamshire.
After the Garforth VC Service of Dedication, it was agreed by Tony and Ron to set up a committee to honour all twenty Nottinghamshire Victoria Cross Holders with a Memorial.
The criteria was set by Tony and Ron when they had a meeting on the 23rd November 2008, knowing fully the extent of work required, they invited Ben Percival, Chris Stewart, and Peter Higton a serving RAF Sergeant and Geoff Allen to be part of the Committee, as they were most supportive of the idea, and agreed to join the committee, which was then set up, with our early meetings being conducted at the offices of A W Lymn Ltd, to whom we offer our sincere thanks, we now hold open committee meetings in the Lord Mayor of Nottingham's Parlour due to seating capacity, and core Committee meetings at A W Lymn Ltd board room.
Full and comprehensive records have been kept by Tony Higton on his 2 projects and are available to assist with any project that you may like to do yourself. Contact us for more details.
We then contacted the Victoria Cross and George Cross Society in Whitehall London, to take advice on naming the Committee, and so based on their advice we called ourselves the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Victoria Cross Committee, this title complimented the criteria that we had set for the project, We then started working out our strategy and goals, with the main ones being;
Selecting the type of memorial (Now completed)
Selecting the site of the memorial (Now completed)
Fund raising (Ongoing)
Accordingly we are now moving forward on all of these
The memorial agreed upon is based on a similar memorial which is sited on the Somme Battlefield, at the Ulster Tower, near Thiepval, and is of rough hewn granite polished and engraved on one side.
The site we selected was Nottingham Castle Grounds, and fortunately for us Dave Green the Nottingham Castle manager, and Nottingham City Council, were most supportive and that is now moving forward, with plans, and method statements submitted as requested, we now have the written consent from Nottingham City Council Planning Dept.
Fund raising began with the launch of our Victoria Cross Exhibition at the Nottingham Council House, which is the same exhibition that is on display at The Masonic Hall, Goldsmith Street, Nottingham, with other events now being planned, along with contacting the various regiments concerned.
Our good friends at Castle Rock Brewery recently held a beer festival in support of this most worthwhile project, and they are now planning further events.
And the Canalhouse gives us free use of their premises to hold meetings there.
So things are progressing well, and with the support of our friends at;
